செங்காவி மார்பு பச்சை புறா மதுரையில்

செங்காவி மார்பு பச்சை புறா (Orange-breasted green pigeon) முதல் முறையாக மதுரை மாவட்டம், பேரையூர் பகுதியில் காட்டுயிர் ஒளிப்பட கலைஞர் திரு. ஜோதிக்கண்ணன் அவர்களால் 03.01.2026 அன்று ஆவணம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. புறாக்கள் குடும்பத்தில் (Family: Columbidae) பச்சை புறா (Genus: Treron) பேரினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மஞ்சள் கால் பச்சை புறா (Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon), சாம்பல் நெற்றி பச்சை புறா (Grey-fronted Green-Pigeon) மதுரை மாவட்டத்தில் மதுரை இயற்கை பண்பாட்டு அறக்கட்டளை குழுவினரால் கடந்த ஆண்டுகளில் ஆவணம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தென்கிழக்கு ஆசிய பகுதிகளில் காணப்படும் செங்காவி மார்பு பச்சை புறாக்கள் இமாலய பகுதிகளிலும் தென்னிந்தியாவில் மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மற்றும் கிழக்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைகளில் காணப்படுகிறது. பறவைகள் கணக்கெடுப்பு போன்ற ஆவணப்படுத்தும் பணியின் போது இப்பறவைகள் அரிதாகவே தென்படுகின்றன. மதுரை மாவட்ட எல்லையாக உள்ள மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மலைகள் உசிலம்பட்டி முதல் சாப்டூர் வரை நீண்டுகிடக்கிறது. உசிலம்பட்டி முதல் பேரையூர் வரை உள்ள மலைத்தொடர்ச்சியும் அதன் அடிவாரப்பகுதியும் யானைகளின் வலசை பாதையாக உள்ளதென தமிழ்நாடு அரசு அமைத்து அறிஞர்கள் குழு பட்டியலிட்டுள்ளனர். மேலும் இப்பகுதியில் சிறுத்தை, கரடி, மான் இனங்கள் போன்ற பெருவிலங்குகள் ஆவணம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. பல்வேறு அரிய வகை காட்டுயிர்கள், அழிவின் விளிம்பில் உள்ள காட்டுயிரிகள் புகலிடமாக விளங்கும் இப்பகுதியில் கல் குவாரி, புளு மெட்டல் குவாரி போன்ற பல்லுயிரிய பெருக்கத்திற்கு அச்சுறுத்தலை ஏற்படுத்துகின்ற குவாரிகள் இயங்குகின்றன.

இந்நிலையில் மதுரை மாவட்டம், பேரையூர் - சாப்டூர் பகுதியில் உள்ள மலைத்தொடர் அடிவாரத்தில் செங்காவி மார்பு பச்சை புறாவை முதல் முறையாக காட்டுயிர் ஒளிப்பட கலைஞர் திரு. ஜோதிக்கண்ணன் அவர்களால் ஆவணம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதே பகுதியில் வண்ணச் சுண்டங்கோழி (Painted spurfowl), தவிட்டுச் சிலம்பன் (Common Babbler), கொம்பன் ஆந்தை (Rock Eagle Owl), செங்கழுத்து வல்லூறு (Red Necked Falcon) உள்ளிட்ட அரிதாக காணப்படும் பறவைகளை திரு. ஜோதிகண்ணன் ஆவணம் செய்துள்ளார். பேரையூர் - சாப்டூர் பகுதியில் பாதுகாக்கப்பட்ட வனப்பகுதியின் கீழ் வராத பல்லுயிரிய பெருக்கம் நிறைந்த தனித் தனி மலைகளையும் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டுமென அவர் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

The Orange-breasted Green Pigeon (Treron bicinctus) has been documented for the first time in Madurai district, at Peraiyur, by wildlife photographer Mr. Jothikannan today (03.01.2026). Within the pigeon family (Family: Columbidae), two other species belonging to the green pigeon genus (Genus: Treron)—the Yellow-footed Green Pigeon and the Grey-fronted Green Pigeon—have previously been recorded in Madurai district by members of the Madurai Nature Cultural Foundation.

The Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, which is found in Southeast Asia, is also seen in the Himalayan regions and in South India along the Western and Eastern Ghats. These birds are rarely sighted during documentation efforts such as bird censuses. The Western Ghats forming the boundary of Madurai district extend from Usilampatti to Saptur. The hill ranges and their foothill regions from Usilampatti to Peraiyur have been identified by a committee of experts appointed by the Government of Tamil Nadu as an elephant migratory corridor. In addition, large mammals such as leopard, bear, and various deer species have been documented in this region.

Despite being a refuge for many rare and endangered wildlife species, the area faces threats from activities such as stone quarries and blue metal quarries, which pose serious risks to biodiversity.

In this context, the Orange-breasted Green Pigeon has now been recorded for the first time at the foothills of the Peraiyur–Saptur hill ranges in Madurai district by wildlife photographer Mr. Jothikannan. In the same region, he has also documented several rarely seen bird species including the Painted Spurfowl, Common Babbler, Rock Eagle Owl, and Red-necked Falcon.

He has urged that the biodiversity-rich isolated hill ranges in the Peraiyur–Saptur region, which do not fall under protected forest areas, should also be brought under protection.
